From Mindat
If your computer is having problems connecting with the standard chatroom applet on the http://www.mindat.org/chat.php page, you may be able to connect using an alternative IRC application.
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and is a standard method of realtime chat communication on the internet, dating back over ten years. IRC Chat works by clients (your computer) connecting in to a central server (or network of servers) which relay messages from you to other computers connected at the same time.
In the case of mindat.org, there is one central server, and many people can connect to this to chat at the same time.
